A stream follows a running programme

Think of a live stream as joining a programme already in progress. You generally hear the station's current selection of music, speech and advertising. Choosing the station does not mean choosing the next song or starting a show from its beginning. Some broadcasters offer separate recordings, but those are a different listening option. Before selecting a stream, decide whether you want live company or a particular episode on demand.

FM, DAB and internet use different paths

An FM or DAB receiver gets a broadcast signal through its radio reception system. An internet stream reaches you through Wi-Fi, mobile data or another internet connection. Finding the same station in both places does not make those delivery methods identical. For an online session, check the connection you will actually use. A device described as a radio may support one or several methods, so consult its own information.

Availability depends on the stream

A station listed in a directory may temporarily stop streaming or restrict listening in certain territories. Your physical location and the broadcaster's distribution choices can therefore affect access. An unavailable stream is not proof that all internet radio is broken. Compare another station on the same connection and look for the broadcaster's access information. Avoid assuming that a listing guarantees every show or event can be heard everywhere.

Choose the format that fits your session

The useful distinction is control. Live radio works well when you want a continuing programme chosen by a broadcaster. A podcast or other recording is more suitable when you want a specific episode. Use a short trial to check whether the format matches your expectations.

Does internet radio work without the internet?

An online stream requires an internet connection. A device may also have a separate broadcast receiver, but that capability must be checked for the particular device.
